The Difference Between Photovoltaic Inverter And Energy Storage Inverter

Energy Storage Inverter

Energy storage converter (also known as PCS), is a key component that enables the bidirectional flow of electrical energy between the energy storage system and the power grid. It is primarily used to control the charging and discharging processes of the battery and to achieve conversion between AC and DC power. In the absence of a power grid, the battery can directly supply power to AC loads.

Photovoltaic Inverter

Photovoltaic Inverter is a specialized inverter used in the field of solar photovoltaic power generation. Its primary function is to convert the direct current generated by solar panels into alternating current that can be directly connected to the grid or used by loads, through power electronic conversion technology.

The Difference Between the Two Types of Inverters

The photovoltaic inverter optimizes the electrical output of solar panels through built-in Maximum Power Point Tracking (called MPPT) technology. It then efficiently converts direct current into stable sinusoidal alternating current that meets grid standards, using power electronic devices and control circuits. During this process, the inverter also includes various monitoring and protection features to ensure the system operates safely and stably, whether connected to the grid or in standalone mode.

A storage inverter is a specialized type of inverter that not only converts the direct current produced by solar panels into alternating current but also integrates with energy storage systems batteries. This type of inverter allows for the storage of excess electrical energy in batteries during periods of high solar generation, and the subsequent extraction of this stored energy to power loads or feed into the grid during times of low solar generation or grid outages. Storage inverters typically have the capability to control bidirectional power flow, enabling the conversion of energy in both directions: from DC to AC (charging) and from AC to DC (discharging). This technology enhances the flexibility and reliability of the energy system, particularly in situations where renewable energy generation is intermittent or grid supply is unreliable.

Performance

Photovoltaic inverters generally focus on factors such as DC/AC conversion efficiency, power density, protection functions, and protection levels. Energy storage inverters focus more on factors such as charging and discharging efficiency, on-grid/off-grid switching speed, and storage energy density.

Application

Photovoltaic inverters are mainly used in balcony, household, industrial, and commercial photovoltaic systems, ground-based, centralized, and other large-scale photovoltaic power stations, etc.

Energy storage inverters are widely used between energy storage systems and power grids, industrial and commercial energy storage power stations, household photovoltaic storage, and other scenarios are common application scenarios.
