- Voltage Requirements
As lifepo4 batteries have a different voltage profile compared to lead acid batteries. The nominal voltage of a lifepo4 battery cell is 3.2V, for a 12.8V lifepo4 battery, the full-charge voltage is 14.6V, but for a 12.8V lead acid battery, the full-charge voltage for it is around 13.2V to 13.8V. So if you use a lead acid battery charger to charge the lifepo4 battery, it may lead to under-charging of the battery, and this could potentially damage the lifepo4 battery;
- Safety Consideration
A lifepo4 battery charger is always designed to equip with safety features, it will protect the lifepo4 battery against overcharging, over current, over temperature, etc. And these conditions may lead to the lifepo4 battery catching fire or exploding. If your current converter can not provide the correct voltage for the lifepo4 battery charging, it may damage the lifepo4 batteries.
- Battery Management System(BMS)
Lifepo4 batteries are usually equipped with smart battery management system, the BMS will monitor the status of the lifepo4 batteries, such as charging rate, voltage, current, temperature, and so on to ensure safe and efficient operation. The converters for the lead acid battery usually have no support for communication with the BMS, which may lead to sub-optimal charging issues of the lifepo4 batteries. In this way, you can consider to change the RV converter.
- Charging Speed Concern
Usually, the RV converters for the lead acid batteries have lower charging speed, while the lifepo4 batteries can accept a higher charging rate than lead acid batteries. You can use the stand alone DC to DC charger to charge the lifepo4 batteries. The DC to DC charger can convert the vehicle’s electrical system voltage to the appropriate charging voltage for the lifepo4 batteries and can help to protect the lifepo4 batteries from over-charging.
3.Shore Power Charging
Modern RVs may have a converter that can convert the AC power from the shore power source to appropriate DC voltage, if they can be adjusted and compatible with lifepo4 batteries, then you can use it to charge the lifepo4 batteries.

- Regular Charging. Charge the lifepo4 batteries regularly. And we recommend you to keep the lifepo4 discharged to around 50% and 60% although the lifepo4 batteries can discharge up to 90%;
- Proper Storage. Keep the lifepo4 batteries in a cool and dry place in your RV, Check the voltage of the batteries periodically during storage to prevent discharge damage;
- Keep Terminals Clean. Use a battery terminal cleaner and water to clean the terminals to prevent them from corrosion.
- Monitor the Performance. Some advanced RV electrical systems have battery monitors, you can monitor the battery parameters such as SOC, voltage, current, temperature, etc. to understand better about the health of the lifepo4 batteries.
